President’s Message

Dear Members

On behalf of the Board of Trustees of the Clark County Medical Society and its loyal staff, I am pleased to present you with my last message as President.

During the year 2000 our membership grew to almost 1000 members. The Clark County Medical Society was busy planning programs for all practicing physicians and endeavoring to increase public awareness of our existence.  We held seminars in medical malpractice and had several members’ social events, including a mixer with the University of Nevada Medical School. Although attendance was sometimes sparse, those that attended were treated to very informative and entertaining sessions.

By the time you read this message, we may have already installed our new President, Raj Chanderraj, M.D.  and the new board of trustees for 2001-2002.  I wish Raj and the new board the same stimulating and challenging experiences as I had during my tenure. I also want to thank my present board for supporting the Society during this past year. I was always impressed by the fact that we had a quorum at every meeting, a major accomplishment in itself, indicating the level of commitment of all the trustees. To those trustees that have “done their time”, my sincere thanks and congratulations for a job well done.  We will miss their contribution and insightful comments. Those leaving include Dr. Jeffrey Cichon, Past President;  Dr. Arnold Wax, Treasurer and caustic commentator; Dr. Stacy Garry, Delegation Chair;  Dr. Stanley Ames, Credentials Committee;  Dr.  Weldon Havins (our new Executive Director) and Dr. Robert Schreck, AMA Delegate.  Dr. Schreck is now President-Elect of the NSMA.   I would also like the thank the staff of the Medical Society for their hard work and for always having  smiles on their faces.  Thank you Dot,  Deborah, Marisol and Kirsten. Lastly, a big thanks goes to my wife Wendy, editor and proofreader extraordinaire , for always making sure that my messages were grammatically (if not phonetically) correct.

At the beginning of our new fiscal year, we look forward to continuing to work on behalf of our fellow physicians.  We will make every effort to provide all of you with the direction and stimulus needed for a successful year in the ever-challenging world of medicine.

We hope to be able to give you many reasons to remain satisfied members, welcoming your input and involvement at any time.

Respectfully yours,

Raul T. Meoz, M.D.

President 2000-2001

Clark County Medical Society Board of Trustees Minutes

April 17, 2001

Present Were: Raul Meoz, MD, Presiding; Stanley Ames, MD; Raj Chanderraj, MD; Andrew Cohen, MD; Weldon Havins, MD; John Ellerton, MD; Warren Evins, MD; Kevin Hyer, MD; Edwin Kingsley, MD; Donald Kwalick, MD; Marietta Nelson, MD; Robert Shreck, MD; Annette Teijeiro, MD; and Arnold Wax, MD.

Staff Present: Weldon Havins, MD, JD, Executive Director; Lisa Puleo, Office Manager; Deborah Spencer, Public Relations Coordinator; Marisol K. Aliaga, Public Relations Assistant; and Kirsten Allison, Membership Administrative Assistant.

Guest Present: Marie Ellerton, Esq.; Billie Darnell, President of CHSI of Nevada; James S. Leftwich, CEO & Chairman of CHSI of Nevada.

At 6:05 PM Dr. Meoz called the Meeting to Order.

Dr. Meoz introduced Marie Ellerton to the Board.   Ellerton introduced Billie Darnell and James Leftwich of CHSI of Nevada to the Board to discuss the malpractice insurance.  A discussion on what the company can do for members and the way they research members was discussed.  A suggestion of getting a proposal to see if our society will fit into getting a group insurance program was made.

Dr. Kwalick moved for  CHSI to give us a proposal.

Dr. Kinsgley seconded the motion which passed unanimously.

Financial Report

Dr. Wax reported: 1) Total Net Revenue as of 03/31/01 is $370,465.23@ 75% of the projected revenue for the fiscal year to date. 2) Total Operating and Building Expense is $307,294.68 as of 03/31/01, 67% of projected expenses for the fiscal year to date. 3) Cash balance as of March 31, 2001 is $235,353.40. 4) As this is the report for the end of the Ninth month of the fiscal year, the budget should reflect 75% 9/12=75%. 5) Cash balance for this time last year $284,018.37 a decrease of 17%.

Administrative Report:

Dr. Havins reported:  1) Four staff will be Notaries and notary service will be free to members and the appropriate fees to non-members. 2) A relationship with the Nursing Board and Osteopathic Board was suggested.

Dr. Kwalick moved to work with all the health related Boards.

Dr. Evins seconded the motion, which passed unanimously.

3) Clark County Medical Society will be holding free CME Medical Ethics classes May 5, May 26 and June 16 to our members and $50.00 for non-members. 4) WML wants a list of our members in order to offer them CME certificates over the Internet.  A down side is that your name will be sponsored by a company and should not be marketed.  Also DO’s are not included in this program.  Dr. Havins suggested that we approve this.  A discussion was held.

Dr. Evins motioned to approve but with the condition of the money we make can go into having CME classes for the DO’s.

Dr. Teijeiro seconded the motion which passed unanimously.

5) Air conditioning unit.  Dr. Havins read out bids.  Elder Air’s bid for $2000 was what Dr. Havins recommended.

Dr. Kwalick approved the motion.  The Board approved it unanimously.

6) Directory- Deborah Spencer will pick up directory duties.  Building Committee

Dr. Meoz reported that the block wall was knocked down due to the safety issues involved.

Dr. Teijeiro discussed the WGDL, Inc. proposal to fix the building.  She would like a drawing to see how it would look. She recommended the extra money saved on the block wall be moved into the building fund.  Companies faxed her bids for doing an Asbestos check.  She will get back with the companies to evaluare differences in the bids -one bid for $2000 and the other $800.  This is a beginning so that way we can decide what to spend our money on, whether it being a new building or remodeling the old building.

Community Relations Committee

Dr. Kingley reported: Installation Dinner. The June 12 event will be held at Caesars Palace. An invitation is being drafted and the cost is tentatively $55 for members and $75 for non-members. Media Training. A schedule will be developed to make media training more available to members. A session will be planned for this summer for the incoming officers. Completion of media training will become a prerequisite for referrals to respond to media inquiries. Media Response Guidelines. Staff was instructed to contact the Community Relations chairman when they receive inquiries from the media. The chairman will select the appropriate member to respond to the inquiry.

Executive Director Notes

Weldon (Don) Havins, M.D., J.D., CCMS Executive Director and Special Counsel

All active and provisional CCMS members should have by now received the new CCMS benefit: a “free” Category I CME CD-ROM along with your User Name and Password.  If you choose to bypass the CD-ROM, you can proceed directly to the WML website at http://www.wml.com

Before you go to the WML website, it would be helpful to download the free RealPlayer 8 Basic program.  That download can be found at www.real.com/player.   If you go to the wml.com website first, you will probably proceed to purchase the RealPlayer 8Plus program which will provide you with all sorts of fabulous and wonderful internet capabilities that you will never use.

The WML home page contains a daily medical news video feature which runs automatically.  On the same page is an area to sign in with your user name and password.  Pressing the sign-in button may appear to take you back to the same page, but actually permits you to select CME programs for audiovisual viewing.  You can select “preview” or “lecture” on many topics.  The “previews” are excellent synopses of what will be covered in the lecture.  If you select “lecture,” the formal CME program will begin.  Most lectures are about an hour in length and provide one CME credit.  The two lectures I viewed, both on arthritis, were outstanding.

Sometime in the future, commercial sponsors will be assigned to each of us.  We will notice a section of a WML page stating that this CME is sponsored by the particular named sponsor.  Expect it and don’t be bothered by it.  Sponsors will be paying about three hundred dollars per physician for the privilege of having their name on your WML page.  Supposedly, a few dollars of this ($35 to 45) will find its way back to CCMS’ general fund.  None of this, however, will occur until sponsors are found for all the CCMS membership.  Incidentally, our colleagues in the Washoe County Medical Society have also enrolled in this program.

Enjoy this intriguing new mode of providing "free" Category I CME to our physician membership.
